Aayrathil Oruvan A special Report
Hopes of good harvest in Pongal
Jan 13 2010
Rs 50 crore at stake as four Tamil films, a fair mix of genres, release today

Pongal (ha rvest festival) being one of the prominent days for the release of new films, the industry is hoping for a go od harvest at the box office too.
For the four producers, around Rs 50-Rs 55 crore is at stake. “Of these, Ayirathil Oruvan is the most awaited film and has raised lot of expectations,” says L Sur - esh of Anandha Films, a distribution house for Tamil films.
A lot of hope is running on Ayirathil Oruvan, who - se release is being awaited by the industry for more th - an one reason. Dir ected by director Selva rag havan, it was launched ov er two ye - ars ago with an initial budget of Rs 7 crore. The story begins in 2008-09 and travels back to the 12th Century Chola age in Tamil Nadu.
The film has finally la - nded at the finishing desk with a budget of around Rs 31 crore, a cost overrun th - at is sure to make even gov - ernment infrastructure pr - ojects sulk. While the film would have given its first time producer, Ravindran, several sleepless nights, it has also drawn its hero, Karthi, who had a spectacular debut in Paruthiveeran, under its clutches.
Incidentally, this being Karthi’s second film, he co - uld not resist a role in its di - stribution. Having volunte - ered to take the distribution rights of NSC (north and south Arcot and Chenga - lpettu), the largest region for Tamil theatrical release, he now finds himself stuck with around three to five more areas. That’s quite a handful for a young hero, even if he happens to be a bright star and the younger brother of leading Tamil st - ar, Suriya.
“While it may turn to be a well-made film, it also has a drawback. With a length of around 5,000 metres, the film’s running time will be around three hours and 10 minutes. How many people in the audience will have the patience to sit through for so long is the moot question,” said a veteran distri butor on condition of anon y mity. One can call it – passion with vengeance.
Besides Ayirathil Oruv - an, Dhanush-starrer Kut ty, too, has raised expectatio ns.
Produced at an estima ted budget of Rs 15 cro re, it has once again brou ght together Yaradi Nee Mohini’s hit co - mbo of director Mit hran Ja - wahar and actor Dh anush, who not only has a series of hits, but also is the younger br other of director Selvara - gh avan. While Kutty is a remake of Telugu hit Arya, the fact that it is clashing with Ayirathil Oruvan ma kes it a family contest.
Besides these, there is Nanayam, a copy of some Hollywood flick on a bank robbery, as well as Porkal am.
Both these are comparatively small budget films, but the latter has attracted reasonable interest in the industry.
So, let the festival begin

Vettaikaran
‘Vettaikaran’ just another ‘no-risk’ masala movie (Tamil Film Review)
By Aravindan D.I.
Film: “Vettaikaran”; Director: Babu Sivan; Cast: Vijay, Anushka Shetty, Salim Ghouse, Srihari, Srinath; Music: Vijay Anthony; Rating: **
Vijay, touted to be the next Tamil superstar, continues to ride on worn-out masalafilms without any attempt at novelty.
“Vettaikaran”, directed by debutant Babu Sivan, is Vijay’s 49th film and the actorseems to be satisfied with the no-risk commercial formula to maintain his position inthe industry. The movie, however, fails to live up to expectations even as a commercial flick, as it seems like a collage of many previous films made in the same genre by directors like Dharani, Hari and Perarasu.
We have seen in umpteen movies, a youth coming to the city to study or find a livelihood but getting caught in the web of all-powerful villains and their hit men. And of course, the powerful villain would remain the most dreaded guy only until he meets the hero, who goes on to single-handedly wipe out his entire regime.
“Vettaikaran” follows the same path of movies like “Pokkiri”, “Bhagavathy”, “Thiruppachi” and “Thenavattu” among many others.
The storyline goes like this: Ravi Alias Police Ravi (Vijay), a Tuticorin guy comes to Chennai to become a police officer like his idol Devaran IPS (Sri Hari). He meets Susheela (Anushka Shetty) at the railway station and instantly falls for her.
While love blossoms in Chennai, Ravi locks horns with Chella, the son of local don Vedhanayagam (Salim Ghosh). Ravi tames Chella and earns the rivalry of Vedhanayagan.
In the meantime, Ravi is shocked to know that his idol Devraj IPS has lost his career, eyesight and his family because of Vedhanayagam. While Vedhanayagan makes life worse for Ravi by using his hold over the police.
Ravi escapes the trap and becomes a powerful gang leader to counter Vedhanayagam. Ravi, with moral support from Devaraj, puts an end to Vedhanayagam and his gang with his intelligence and muscle power.
While the first half moves on quickly, the second half tends to drag. The cliched scenes don’t help either. The movie has grossly failed to entertain, as it is nothing but a ‘copy-paste’ exercise by Babu Sivan.
Vijay looks charming and emotes well but he has nothing new to offer, as he is playing such a role for umpteenth time. It is also frustrating to see Vijay, who has acted in so many films, trying to copy the style of Rajnikant.
Gorgeous Anushka spices up the proceedings with her stunning beauty and screen presence. However, like many other Vijay flicks, the heroine doesn’t get any scope to perform. Other actor like Sri Hari and Salim Ghosh pass muster.
Gopinath does a neat work with his camera but music director Vijay Antony fails to impress. However, two of the songs - “Naan Atichcha” and “Karikalan Kaalu” - sound good.

Unnai Pol Oruvan
Unnai Pol Oruvan

Production: Kamal Haasan, Ronnie Screwvala
Direction: Chakri
Star-casts: Kamal Haasan, Mohan Lal, Lakshmi, Tanuja Iyer, Ganesh Venkataram
Music: Shruti Haasan
A challenging face-off between two men involved in events that go unrecorded by law, all in a 100-mins edge-of-the-seat thriller. Isn’t that interesting? If so, just book your tickets for “Unnai Pol Oruvan’ right now and go ahead, watch it.
If “A Wednesday’ made Neeraj Pandey as the finest auteur of Bollywood, debutant Chakri isn’t an exception, as he does justice with a loyal remake of this masterpiece.
With superstars and best actors detailed in their characterizations, and the disconcerting screenplay making the film engrossing, it is a treat for all the classes.
“Unnai Pol Oruvan’ marks the unrecorded series of events that took place between 2 p.m. -6 p.m. on a usual day. But, for those who were involved in this drama, it remains as an unforgettable day in their lives.
Well, Raghavan Maraar (Mohan Lal), City commissioner of police, Mumbai isn’t an elision as he admits it on the final day of his service that a stranger walked into his life and swept him off as a Tsunami.
A stranger (Kamal Haasan) on anonymity makes a phone call to Maraar demanding him to release 4 deadliest criminals, or else he would detonate the bombs planted by him at various parts of the city. Assuming this to be a crank call, Maraar doesn’t take it so seriously until the stranger blows him out of waters stating that he has planted a bomb at Anna Saalai police station, which would blast soon.
Things turn out to be serious for commissioner and his entire department. With no options left to save the entire city from getting deteriorated, Maraar ropes in couple of best cops in department to release the criminals. But then, if you had ever thought this would’ve a clichéd climax, you’re erred.
The breathtaking climax would just let you get thrown into extreme with a sudden twist in tale.
First things first All credit goes to Neeraj Pandey for having conceptualized a phenomenal storyline that lets every audience reflect themselves with the protagonist’s role. Perhaps, if you hadn’t watched the original version of “A Wednesday’, you would feel irksome over the first 20 minutes with the establishment of each character (couple of young cops, a journalist, an actor seeking protection from the commissioner and so on). But later, once we’re drawn in to the core of subject, it’s a different scenario brimmed with nail-biting sequences.
Debutant Chakri doesn’t strain himself in making changes from the original version. But indeed adds some interesting elements with dialogues.
Kamal Haasan shines with his brilliant performance, while Mohan Lal steals the spotlights with a tremendous show…. It’s worth mentioning that he has got more prominence than Kamal Haasan. His conversations with journalist and entire department are so catchy, especially where he meets the computer hacker. Anuja Iyer as the journalist does her part well, while Ganesh Venkataram is a new guy to watch out for. Lakshmi is okay.
Shruti Haasan comes up with middling effort on her musical score. Nothing seems to be impressive with the background score. Manoj has done an excellent job with his digital cinematography.
Finally, “Unnai Pol Oruvan’ is sure to make it big on box office with a long Ramzan weekend. With not so-much money spent for this film, the producers are sure to take a walk with good profit by this weekend.
Verdict: Worth watching…
Rating: 4/5
